Pay attention to the signals ahead. I missed my exit because I was skipping a song to one that didn’t remind me of him and when he loved me more than he does now. Be wary of any short hugs and apathetic answers, and stop wondering whether a separation will help, because it won’t. Remember that we have one single life and for all we know, we only have a handful of years left to live. Pay attention to the signals. And if you see a red flag, it’s not just okay — it’s the right thing to run.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: signal ahead, separation, and handful.

Last night I came to the page to just put down my prompt for the next day, and I sat and looked at these three words, trying so hard to think of a way I could put them together, and then slammed my laptop closed and went to bed.

I have insight.

From the day I began this I told myself I would write a poem a day to these prompts for 90 days.

It wouldn’t have counted if I’d written today’s poem last night. It was today’s poem, and today when I came to the page and looked at the prompt words, my words started flowing like water.

There’s a reason for things, and we have to respect that.
