here you are. you had one foot over the fence and now here you are.
no more of that painful limbo, no more wondering “what will happen
that will make him leave again?” even if you are the one to facilitate the leaving.
set it and forget it, you tell yourself. you get what you get and you
don’t get upset. if you start to stray into thoughts that cause you fear,
remember the times you were comforted, and remember the things that count.

tell yourself you don’t need anymore manifestation or magical thinking,
you just need to be the woman who knows she’s free in her heart
and won’t let anything stop her from getting what she wants.
and you know you’re already that girl, there is a feral part of you
that belongs with the wildlife, not with the rest of this made-up world.
this world has the ability to wear you down and break you
and you can’t let it, because it’s your job to go out there and find the good parts
and bring them back here to write down, so one day, when the goodness
of the world is being forgotten, you can remind everyone that sometimes,
things really do get better, and if you wait long enough,
you’ll find the thing that makes you want to stay alive and keep sharing.

The prompt words for this poem were: limbo, magical thinking, and wildlife
