right now there’s ringing in my ears, and besides that the drip of
the cat’s water fountain and the hum, perhaps, of a water heater,
and i want none of those sounds, i want silence unless it’s something
i’ve been wanting to hear.

i want to travel to florida and see my friend Todd, i want to hear the
dull roar of a plane cruising at altitude, i want him to hear his eggs
crackling over easy, spitting and popping butter, before the whoooosh
of him pouring my scrambled ones into the pan. And the drip of his
coffee pot, and sound of his dogs toenails on the wood floor.

i want the sounds of New York City, the noise of the midtown traffic
that doesn’t cease for a second — the honking horns, the drivers hollaring,
(but mostly the honking horns) and the sizzling and shaking of the
roasted nuts sold at every corner. The screeching of the Subway
grinding to a halt under the street, right under your walking feet.
The constant chatter of pedestrians, the New Yorkers chat importantly, walking with faces forward and phones to ears. The vacationing family
lost at a corner, spouses yelling at each other while this dude over here
is trying to sell them tickets to musicals, because this is Times Square,
this is the intersection of the whole entire world, and sweetie,
Broadway is just right over there.

Today’s prompt words were: altitude, over easy, and musicals.

I love writing to prompts, and in this case, I don’t think anyone would have believed I did, nor would they know which prompts were used.

But this is the challenge — how do you tie together the sky, some eggs, and show tunes?

You write it out until you figure it out.

You write poetry, you solve puzzles while you make new puzzles, and in the end you want to look back and feel like you’ve put no effort into this at all, like this is easy as breathing.

Sweetie. Reality is right over there.
