got no swagger

I have never had the self-confidence
to swagger and sway down hallways
or to dance like no one is watching.

I’ve never been limber, I’ve never
been quick, I’m never going to
fit anyone’s idea of charismatic.

But this is just my packaging,
my flesh suit I carry around
trying to impress everyone
with what’s inside.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: self-confidence, limber, and packaging.

do you remember? – 13/1000

Do you remember
the nights we got so drunk
just for the hell of it,
just because we were
young and free and could?

Do you remember the time
a opossum got into the house
and we had to use brooms
to catch the bastard and
toss it from the recycling bin
into the front yard?

Do you remember
when we first met
how it felt like we’d
known each other forever,
like we’d already been friends,
maybe in another life?

It doesn’t matter how much
space or time divides us.
A part of you will
always be my home.… Read the rest

a warm house with an open door

Everyone experiences the freefall once in their life, I would hope. I would hope that everyone knows what it feels like when their heart explodes in love and turns to gooey mush inside them. There’s a particular feeling of safety and satisfaction when you know you’re loved and cared for, but beware. This love is not a trophy, because love is not a game to be played and won. But remember, too, it shouldn’t be a fight; it shouldn’t be something you have to scrimp and save to be able to afford. True love is not spent or stolen. True … Read the rest

queen of the world

If I could remake the world I’d start with childhood and I’d keep it a lot longer. School won’t be about memorizing things, but about receiving the navigation we need to go out and be good humans in the world. If we’re late we won’t be called delinquent, we will be called dreamers who took a little bit too long staring at the sky or smelling a flower on the way. I have a whole list of things I would do to transform this world into a place where people are actually happy to be. The margin of error can’t … Read the rest

so much

I am a broken person. I was a broken person when you met me, and you were broken, too. I suppose we justified ourselves by saying, we’re so much alike, we have so much in common, we enjoy each other’s company so much. It was only after the fact, once everything fell under the category of “too late” that we realized the weight of our choices, and how our baggage doesn’t jive like the rest of us. But we love each other so much.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: justified, after the fact, and weight.

the low bar

I tried to hurry through
and write a tanka today,
but “temporary insanity”
is eight syllables long,
and I only had space for seven.

Some days, I don’t
set the bar very high
for this project.

Today’s poetry prompts were:hurry, temporary insanity, and the bar.

manifesting

I see myself sitting poolside, my pool boy in his tiny shorts skimming the cool blue water, and I ring a bell for someone to come bring me another iced tea. It’s so Gatsby. Though I am nowhere near the glitz, and nobody knows my name, don’t underestimate me. I’ll publish five books a year and be a millionaire before I’m done with this life.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: poolside, underestimate, and five.

making the grade

The frequency
with which you hurt me
surprises me still.

I really put up
with all that
for so long?

I have a
dilemma of self,
because now,
who am I
without you?

I’m the girl
that keeps going,
nose to grindstone,
making the grade,
getting her heart broken
every single day.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: frequency, dilemma, and making the grade.
