I can explain – 18/1000

“We need to talk.”

“What is it?”

“It’s the alien you’re hiding in the attic.”

“You want it gone?”

“No, I just think if you’re going to hide an alien it shouldn’t be in the attic. We have a basement, that’s more dungeon-y.”

“But I want her to feel welcome.”

“Oh, it’s a her now, is it?”

“It’s always been.”

“What are you doing with her up there?”

“Experiments…”

“Are you probing her, Carl? Are you playing doctor with the alien?”

“No, Maude, I’d never! Maude, no, don’t go up there!”

“I’m going!”

“No! Uh, I can explain the lingerie!”… Read the rest

how special

Make no mistake,
I want this to work out with you,
I want you to be the one
sitting beside me, dueling recliners,
holding hands like you said
you wanted once, when things
weren’t exactly more simple, but
were at least less hard.

But look at how many
milestones we’ve reached together,
how many birthdays and
anniversaries and 4th of July picnics,
all of the breweries and beers,
all of the camping, so, campfires,
and sleeping outside in our tent,
the home we literally built together,
even if it was just for one weekend.

Things might be murky and they’ve… Read the rest

he’ll never marry – 15/1000

They smiled at each other as they twirled on the dance floor, spinning around the other couples who had boring lives and would all go home and bicker.

“You know, we’re the happiest two people here,” he said.

“Probably happier than the bride and groom,” she agreed.

“And this is why I’ll never marry.”

“Because you’d rather dance with strangers?”

“Of course,” he scoffed. “I don’t ever want to tie myself down to a single woman. I can’t be monogamous.”

“Oh, really?.”

“Yeah, seriously,” he said.

“Well, I’m getting married someday,” she said, and danced the night away from him.… Read the rest

him

I’m going to take my name
off the list of the ones waiting
for their person.

I’ve found mine.

The hunt has come to an end,
because this one makes me feel
like a baby bird under a wing,
like the air we need to breathe.

No wonder he leaves me
breathless and tongue-tied.

When he holds me,
all I want in the world is him.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: list, the hunt, and tongue-tied.

i don’t look back, i’m not going that way

Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

Be here now.

That’s a thing, right?

I feel like I spend half my time in the past and half in the future, and honestly don’t enjoy the present moments as much as I should.

But I worry about the future constantly. I worry about not being able to afford things, specifically, and specifically my rent.

Being that I work at a place that has a food pantry, I see and hear about a lot of homeless people, and I am starting to consider being homeless one … Read the rest

a little bit of my grandpa

What is the greatest gift someone could give you?

When we had our family Christmas, Bobby told me that he had something special coming for me, but it hadn’t arrived yet. I’d have to wait a little while.

I’m not a big gift lover, I mean, I love gifts, but I’m not going to get annoyed if one doesn’t come for me.

But then the mail came yesterday and he brought me a big, slim package.

It’s a copy of a 1961 edition of LOOK Magazine in which my grandfather was profiled and interviewed about his time as a submariner … Read the rest

making the grade

The frequency
with which you hurt me
surprises me still.

I really put up
with all that
for so long?

I have a
dilemma of self,
because now,
who am I
without you?

I’m the girl
that keeps going,
nose to grindstone,
making the grade,
getting her heart broken
every single day.

Today’s poetry prompt words were: frequency, dilemma, and making the grade.

the proposal – 1/1000

He was down on one knee with the open box in his hand, looking at me, confused.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“Bobby, it’s me. What do you mean?”

He looked at the shimmering ring in his hand and snapped the box closed as he stood.

“I don’t know what’s going on here, but I don’t know you.”

“Excuse me, dear, where am I?” a woman asked.

Everyone in the room looked scared and confused but me.

What magic is this, what evil?

I was inches away from everything I wanted, but he forgot … Read the rest
