haunted house – 35/1000

We stood in the street looking at the house for what felt like hours.

It got so late in the afternoon, I didn’t think we were going to make it inside before dark, and we had to be home before dark.

It would be fine; we wouldn’t have time to go inside.

But I was wrong, of course, and my friends got me to follow them through that open door that was hanging on one rusty hinge.

We never thought it could slam behind us.

We never could have imagined what would be on the other side of that door.… Read the rest

we are all made of stars – 34/1000

I’ve traveled incomparable distances through space and time to be you.

I’ve seen all the things that you’ve missed: the dinosaurs, the Neanderthal’s (who say hello), the Romans, the rise of Nazis, the fall of America.

(Oh wait, you’re not missing that, you’re living it.)

Within you are billions of years of time getting your back, making your spine tall and strong as a planet of its own, what everything else is tied to, to make you.

You will never see me, even if you think you do, that shimmer on your skin is your own glow, babydoll. Shine on.… Read the rest

not going to Oz – 31/1000

She went up like Dorothy would have, had she not gone to Oz.

Up up up into the sky, into the place where angels live in the clouds, that’s what Dad taught her, that the people we love will always be there watching over us.

Well, who was watching over her when she rose up only to come crashing back to the earth and be buried under a pile of awful?

She didn’t see anyone in the clouds, and she didn’t think anyone was watching over anyone.

It felt empty up there, like the inside of her heart always did.… Read the rest

no news is good news – 30/1000

Getting ready for work, I have a smile on my face and a lightness in my step and in my heart that is unusual for this time of morning.

I have coffee, get dressed, get to the office early and have a great day.

I go home, have dinner, chill with the people I love, and get into my nice, warm bed.

There’s nothing amiss, there’s nothing to complain or worry about or fear.

I am able to slide between the sheets and fall asleep without being scared for anyone at all.

Cable news went off the air this week.… Read the rest

putzing around online

What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?

Something like this.

I’m always putzing around in my leisure time. I’m on my laptop picking away at something or reading what someone else has written, I’m scribbling in a notebook, I’m reading on my Kindle, listening to an audio book, or holding a paper one in my hands, which is too infrequent these days.

But I enjoy putting words on screens and papers, I enjoy getting them out of my head and my hands and making them into something someone can use, even just me.

I want more than … Read the rest

I can explain – 18/1000

“We need to talk.”

“What is it?”

“It’s the alien you’re hiding in the attic.”

“You want it gone?”

“No, I just think if you’re going to hide an alien it shouldn’t be in the attic. We have a basement, that’s more dungeon-y.”

“But I want her to feel welcome.”

“Oh, it’s a her now, is it?”

“It’s always been.”

“What are you doing with her up there?”

“Experiments…”

“Are you probing her, Carl? Are you playing doctor with the alien?”

“No, Maude, I’d never! Maude, no, don’t go up there!”

“I’m going!”

“No! Uh, I can explain the lingerie!”… Read the rest

how special

Make no mistake,
I want this to work out with you,
I want you to be the one
sitting beside me, dueling recliners,
holding hands like you said
you wanted once, when things
weren’t exactly more simple, but
were at least less hard.

But look at how many
milestones we’ve reached together,
how many birthdays and
anniversaries and 4th of July picnics,
all of the breweries and beers,
all of the camping, so, campfires,
and sleeping outside in our tent,
the home we literally built together,
even if it was just for one weekend.

Things might be murky and they’ve… Read the rest

he’ll never marry – 15/1000

They smiled at each other as they twirled on the dance floor, spinning around the other couples who had boring lives and would all go home and bicker.

“You know, we’re the happiest two people here,” he said.

“Probably happier than the bride and groom,” she agreed.

“And this is why I’ll never marry.”

“Because you’d rather dance with strangers?”

“Of course,” he scoffed. “I don’t ever want to tie myself down to a single woman. I can’t be monogamous.”

“Oh, really?.”

“Yeah, seriously,” he said.

“Well, I’m getting married someday,” she said, and danced the night away from him.… Read the rest

a willing ear – 8/1000

Everyone is thrilled she is coming, and they clamber to get tickets to her show before they sell out.

The excitement builds but people start falling. First the banker’s wife, found dead with her ears cut off.

“Her EARS?”

“Oh, yes.”

On opening night, the theatre has many empty seats, yet she sings so beautifully, no one notices she can’t pack a house.

By the last night of her show the theatre is only half full, yet she shines anyway.

It helps to know that even when she can’t pack a theatre, she always has a willing ear to listen.… Read the rest
