staring at the sun

the sky isn’t trying to put on a show
with its cotton candy colors, it doesn’t
need to reach to be impressive, like
the need i have to be seen by you

it just is what it is and everyone loves it
and it’s beautiful, so why not go big?

why not, when the time is passing
so quickly we get whiplash and i’m
afraid that soon, tomorrow will be too late?

a girl can get a real headache from
staring at the sun; when we think we’re
staring down the future, but
we’re really looking at the past

She thought she was going to have a good life, but she didn’t, no she didn’t.

Every scrap of love was fickle, every realized dream a nightmare.

Everyone who told her she was sweet as lollipops had no problem dropping her in the trash when they were finished sucking the life out of her.

In the beginning
our sleeping arrangements were
“only once in a while”.

That didn’t keep it
from being a fairytale;
you were my whole world.

When the bed was ours
I won the damn lottery,
is this what’s called luck?

saltwater

you had me cornered, too shocked to 
react to the words you were saying, 
too scared to make them real

the same old story told so many times
it doesn’t even hurt much anymore, 
it’s just jarring, it’s just one more piece
in the fresh hell of my life that I don’t
need to deal with right now

when you’re told you’re not breaking
but broken, when you’re asked with
genuine concern “Are you okay?
